Coming Attractions:
Please excuse our dust.
If you've been around town lately, you must have noticed the sights and sounds of big changes in Akron's Historic District. The Akron Art Museum is embarking on a bold vision for the future with a ground breaking 65,000 square foot addition designed by world-renowned architecture firm Coop Himmelb(l)au.
According to Principal Architect Wolf Prix, "This design is based on the paradigm of interactivity. The new building...reorganizes the existing building, integrating it into a unified whole. History is not destroyed or forgotten but intelligently folded into the future."
The new structure, slated to open in 2007, will triple the size of the museum's existing facility, providing much needed space for community programs and exhibitions. It will not just be a place to view art; it will act as the cultural and social center of the community.
While the inside of the museum will showcase permanent collections, traveling exhibitions and selections from its distinguished photography holdings, the expanded outdoor space will offer opportunities for concerts, sculpture displays and other public events.
New Additions:
Sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery or actively participate in the ongoing networking opportunities presented at every turn.
Mocha Maiden: An enchanting art gallery and coffee shop that offers soft seating for the casual morning meeting...or a gathering place for pre-evening activities.
Musica: An entertainment powerhouse that showcases up and coming performance talent, drawing crowds that confirm Akron's Historic District as "the place to be."
