Living in a new city can be a daunting experience, especially when it comes to understanding the dynamics of different neighborhoods.
Akron, Ohio
is no exception. With its diverse population and unique culture, it can be difficult to know what to expect when it comes to the interaction between residents of different neighborhoods. I recently moved to Akron and have been living with my boyfriend's parents in Hartville.We are now looking for a rental home in a more urban area, but have been struggling to find one that is safe and affordable. We have seen many ads that look great on paper, but Trulia's crime map has revealed that many of these areas have high levels of crime. This has been very worrying and frustrating for us. To better understand the situation, I would like to know how common crime really is in Akron and if the crime statistics match the personal experience of those who live in different neighborhoods. Additionally, is the Canton area worth visiting even though we both work within the Akron city limits? It would be great to know that our belongings and ourselves will be safe before signing a lease. Fortunately, there are several organizations in Akron that are working to bring people from different neighborhoods together.
The Downtown Akron Partnership and The Akronist are two such organizations that are helping to bridge the gap between different cultures. Additionally, South Street Ministries and East Akron Neighborhood Development Corp. are neighborhood organizations that are helping to create a sense of community. In an effort to further promote interaction between different neighborhoods, local manufacturer Dominic Falcione from Rubber City Fab is creating 22 unique tables, one for each neighborhood, that will serve as meeting points for each neighborhood to celebrate their neighborhood meals. The City of Akron has also taken steps to help residents connect with their part of the city by revising their neighborhood designations. This has led to the creation of the Neighborhood Congress, which allows representatives from each neighborhood to share best practices and ideas. Overall, it is clear that there are many initiatives in place in Akron that are helping to bring people from different neighborhoods together.
By understanding these initiatives and taking advantage of them, residents can gain a better understanding of their city and its culture.
